Remembering Our Lady on Mother’s Day



Every year on the second Sunday of May, numerous countries throughout the world celebrate Mother’s Day, a beautiful occasion on which to express love toward our own mothers and gratitude for the gift of motherhood, in general. “Honor thy father, and forget not the groanings of thy mother” (Ecclus. 7:29).

This “honor which children are commanded to pay to their parents,” says the Roman Catechism, “should be the spontaneous offering of sincere and dutiful love. This is nothing more than their due, since for love of us, they shrink from no labor, no exertion, no danger. Their highest pleasure it is to feel that they are loved by their children, the dearest objects of their affection” (Part III: The Decalogue, Fourth Commandment, Manner of Honoring Parents).

There is perhaps no greater pain a mother can suffer than to feel unloved and disregarded by her own children, yet this is precisely the sort of pain expressed by our Blessed Mother to Sister Lucia of Fatima on December 10, 1925: “Look, My daughter, at My Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce Me at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude.” For this reason, the Child Jesus prefaced His Mother’s words by imploring Lucia: “Have compassion on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother…”

This Mother’s Day, which happens to fall on May 13 (anniversary of Our Lady’s first apparition at Fatima), let us all remember to “have compassion” on the Immaculate Heart of Mary our Mother, especially by practicing the Five First Saturdays devotion of reparation. In the words of Our Lady, “I promise to assist at the moment of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep Me company for 15 minutes while meditating on the 15 mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to Me.”

Pioneers of the Underground Church in China



Second child to humble farmers, in an ever-expanding family, they all lived and ate and slept and prayed in their quaint home: the stout, single-story Ballycraheen House with a traditional thatched roof, sheaves of wheat straw attached to beams by a highly skilled thatcher.

Head of household, William (1843-1930) worked before the sun rose until after the sun set on his dairy farm, as he tended to his small herd of Herefords, a few dozen square-back cows with reddish-brown coats and white faces with long eyelashes. A few dry cows and bulls filled out the herd to graze the 70-acre estate before sold off for butchering. In a pen off to the side, a few feeder hogs slept and sloshed about in a comfy sty, until it was their time.

Heart of the family, Mary Anne (1862-1945) tended to hearth and home and to her growing brood. In addition to Timothy, there was first-born William (1891-1961), and then Jane (1895-1984), Richard (1898-1972), Joseph (1900-73), and Mary (1902-73).

In the fields behind and beyond the whitewashed stone wall that matched the whitewashed stone house, the family tended to the homestead’s garden, where they tilled, seeded, weeded and prayed for abundant autumnal harvests that produced bushels of potatoes, cabbages, turnips and parsnips. The orchard grew wizened fruit trees with juicy red apples and succulent pears to be plucked from branches and stored alongside the root vegetables in the food press, a large cupboard.

On Sundays, Feast Days and special Sacramental occasions, such as weddings and baptisms, the Leonards clambered aboard their pony and trap, with its shielding canopy to protect them against the drizzles and the downpours. Up Peafield Road a ways, the pony veered left onto Monaleen Road and trotted toward Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. Perched high atop a hill, the family’s spiritual home was a limestone Gothic revival beauty, with its pitched slate roof, soaring bell tower and dedication inscription over the main door: d.o.m. sub invocatione b mariae magdalenae ad 1873, which translates to: God most excellent and great, under the invocation of Blessed Mary Magdalene, AD 1873.

Not the only Leonard family around, the clan extended beyond their own and included another, whose members also traveled by pony and trap to Mary Magdalene Church from their home, the Peafield House, the road’s namesake, about a third of a mile southwest from the Ballycraheen House, just a whistle away on a windy day.

Head of the Peafield estate was William’s brother John (1843-1918). Irish twins, the two men, along with their brother, Richard, and sister, Alice, had originated in Rose Lawn House, a farm on nearly 100 acres, in Castle Troy, where the family had taken root and flourished by the River Shannon.

Also a dairy farmer, John tended to his few dozen Herefords that grazed on more than 70 acres, with the land’s boundaries hugged by a small armlet of the River Groody, where carefree and fun-loving boys went wading and baiting during the summer, catching eels and tossing the black snakelike creatures back into the slow, silent stream.

John’s family included sons William (1891-1959), Patrick (1893-1925) and Richard (1894-1971), who, of all three boys, was the one to become fast friends with his cousin Timothy, from the Ballycraheen House.

During their primary school years, Richard and Timothy walked up Peafield Road to the Monaleen Road passing green pastures with hidden bouquets of red clover and purple thistle, in their homeland of Killonan, Ballysimon. Along the mile or so, they lugged their school satchels, stuffed with lunches, books, pencils and papers.

The old Monaleen National School, which stood under the jurisdiction of the government, had only two classrooms, one for girls and one for boys, which the two entered and took their seats at a long desk that students shared. To rid the chill and the dampness, someone fed lumps of peat, Irish turf, into an open fireplace, igniting a gentle blaze with an aromatic cloud that descended upon the room.

For lunch, the Leonard boys bit into sandwiches, slices of homemade white bread wrapped around slivers of ham from the slaughtered feeder pigs or chunks of cheese from the dairy Herefords. For dessert, they sunk their teeth into apples or pears picked fresh from the fruit trees or grabbed from the food press. Sometimes, they brought soft drink bottles filled with fresh, cream-crested milk, strained through cheesecloth from the dairy pails.

When the cousins proceeded to secondary school, they continued to travel together. On bicycles, they rode about three miles, as the black-crested lapwing flies, to Limerick, a city with a population that would top 38,518 in the 1911 census.

The two steered past rows of bacon factories and tobacco factories and shoe factories, each with a tall red-brick smoke stack that puffed out billows of steam and fumes. At the banks of the River Shannon, they reached Saint Munchin’s College, with its motto of Veritas in Caritate. Founded in 1796, the sprawling estate, on Corbally Road, in Corbally, boasted an immense sports ground.

After school, they bicycled back home and helped with the chores and with the dozens of cows that had to be milked by hand twice a day.

Before bedtime, Timothy, a scholarly, serious young man, sat down with his books, studying the classics. He also memorized Gaelic, with an ancestral love for the old Irish language. The only illumination: the flickering light from a candle like the ones used at church for Mass, or the dim glow from a paraffin oil lamp, with a wick extinguished by rolling it down so as not to blacken the glass globe from sooty wisps of smoke.

Upon graduation, the cousins each made the same solemn decision.

Saying good bye to their families, they boarded the train in Limerick and headed for Dublin, the capital of Ireland. There, the two country boys – an odd pair, with Timothy well over 6 feet tall and Richard about 5 feet 4 inches – were temporarily jostled about in the rush and push of the metropolis, with its population of 304,802.

But they soon continued their journey for the last leg of their trip. Destination: Saint Patrick’s College, the national seminary, in Maynooth, County Kildare, to pursue their vocations. Heeding the call of God, the two submerged themselves in the religious life secluded from the world.

However, after only one year at the seminary, bad news arrived at Maynooth for one of the Leonard boys. Word reached Richard that he was needed at the farm. So he packed away his cassock and collar and returned to Peafield House, leaving behind his cousin, a serious and studious ascetic, who continued with his sacred studies, spending most of his time in the library, as books had always interested him much more than sports.

As the years passed, Richard remained on the family farm, and Timothy received the Sacrament of Holy Orders, on April 28, 1918, for the Limerick diocese. But soon thereafter, he joined the newly formed Maynooth Mission to China, now known as the Missionary Society of Saint Columban, a religious order actively seeking volunteers to join their first group of priests headed to the Far East.

In that first group of 11, Father Leonard’s confreres were: Father Joseph Crossan (1891-1974), Father Matthew Dolan (1888-1957), Father Alphonsus Ferguson (1894-1973), Father Arthur McGuinness (1893-1943), Father Michael McHugh (1876-1959), Father John O’Brien (1894-1968), Father Edward J. O’Doherty (1879-1967), Father Thomas Quinlan (1896-1970), Father Richard Ranagan (1889-1937), and Father Cornelius Tierney (1872-1931).

Ireland born and Ireland bred, Father Leonard left his homeland, the Emerald Isle, the Land of Saints and Scholars.

First, he and his fellow missionaries sailed the 150 miles from Dublin to Liverpool, where, on Saint Patrick’s Day 1920, they boarded the Carmania, a ship that steamed head-on to New York City and docked on Good Friday, April 2. Then onto the Columban’s American headquarters, in Omaha, Nebraska, where they underwent further training. After a month or so, they traveled by railroad to San Francisco, boarded a ship to China and docked in Shanghai, the city renowned as the Paris of the East.

For the final 525 miles, the 11 missionaries on the Woong Woo steamboat floated along the Chiang Jiang, the Long River, known around the world as the Yangtze River. On August 21, 1920, the ship pulled ashore, and the men set foot upon their new home: Wuhan’s Hanyang District, in Hupei (old form of Hubei) province.

Once settled, Father Leonard, with a cast-iron constitution, worked tirelessly and became known for his earnestness, self-sacrifice and for being an exceptionally devout man. His confreres described him as the happiest man in China, blessed with the gift of laughter, despite all the dangers.

Stationed in Yo-Ba, Mienyang, he pecked out a typewritten letter to his parents, on November 29, 1921. With levity and perhaps a bit of mental reservation, he attempted to alleviate any worry that his family may have had about him in his new surroundings. He signed off with his preferred Tadhg, the Gaelic equivalent of Timothy.

“My Dear Father and Mother,

“I am just after finishing my retreat at Hanyang and I got safely back to this diocese up here. I think it is more correct to call it a diocese than a parish. I said safely, and lest a little account of my adventures which you will see in the Far East probably later on might frighten you, I shall tell you all.

“I was in a little steamboat on the way to Hanyang when it was suddenly attacked by brigands. I was in the most conspicuous place in the boat; I was given the place of honour as you know I am a respectable looking man. So I was more exposed to the bullets of the brigands than the other passengers, being in the front of the boat I was the first to come into their view. The account I am giving you, which is the correct account will show you that there is very little danger to my life here. Those brigands waited till the boat had come close up to them and then fired several shots into the Chinese passengers with the object of killing or wounding a few to ensure that no one would object to handing out all the money he had. They could be heard distinctly warning one another to beware of the foreigner. All Chinese are afraid of the foreigners; and those fellows feared that if they hit me they would not long enjoy life of the brigand. The boat stopped, and all the passengers had to clear out except myself; all were searched except myself and my boy and deprived of all the money they had; next the boat was searched and those ruffians got away with a few hundred pounds, about £300. They had shot one dead, but there was time to baptize him, and wounded four badly. You will rejoice with me, I feel sure, that I was able to help the wounded; otherwise they would be rather badly off. I had them removed to the Hanyang hospital, where the doctor soon made new men of them. Before I left Hanyang for this place one of them was well enough to be able to get through the catechism in a few days. The sad little incident has done good, and will surely be the means of making a number of conversions, apart altogether from the four wounded.

“My life is safe enough here; I am in God’s hands, and a sparrow does not fall without God knowing it. So you need not be afraid. I am here to do God’s work, and God is the protector of my life. Whom shall I fear, therefore? I know that you will thank God with me for the good He has done through your own son. I have not the time to write you a longer letter at present. I write you this account lest you might be frightened. It is only necessary to say that I know a good deal about China now and I am as little afraid of anything happening to me as I would be in holy Ireland. I am in great form; life here suits me immensely; any hardships there are well compensated for. You see I am at the end of my tether, so to speak, and have not time to begin a new page. Did the Doc. make a nun of Maire yet? You hate being a Sister, Maire, don’t you. That is no sign that you won’t, if God so wills it. Any chance yourself or Janie would help to man Cathercon. Whisht with your Cahircon, I hear mother saying.

“Pray for me all of you, won’t you, and thank God for the great honor He has conferred on me in making me His ambassador here. Not only has He done great things for me, but He has asked me to do great things. Help me that He may be glorified.

“With love to all of you, and all the neighbours and friends,


After only a few short years in China, back to Ireland he went, in 1924, to perform promotional work for the Columban Fathers, always in need of donations and draftees to shore up the depleted reserves for the Church Militant.

At home, he found his family in the beautiful, newly constructed Ballycraheen House: a two-story, four-bedroom stone structure, Georgian style architecture, with a slated hip roof and a symmetrical arrangement of door, windows and even chimneys.

The old thatched house, where all the Leonard children had arrived into the world, had been converted into a cow house, where the Herefords would bring their calves into the world.

His bachelor brother, Richard, had stayed home to take care of the farm, so, too, did his spinster sisters. But the other two brothers, like Timothy, had joined the priesthood. William was on his way to becoming an acclaimed biblical scholar, earning a Doctorate of Sacred Scripture. Joseph would live most of his life as a parish priest in Athlacca, County Limerick.

While at home, on January 23, 1925, he wrote to his brother William, on the teaching staff of Saint Patrick’s Seminary, in Sydney, Australia.

“My Dear Liam,

“Your letter reached me at Ballysimon this morning. I am so sorry to hear that your health is not good. Perhaps you overdid it when there was question of mortifying yourself at meal-time or times which should be meal-times. I shall say Mass for you to-morrow, and as often as I can in the near future, that God may give you your health, and that you may know His blessed will. I’m sure you will continue to act according to His will, like a man.

“A few words about Giolla an amuráin [Gaelic for unfortunate fellow]. I had been labouring under a rather serious handicap in Yo-Ba, but Fr. Galvin wished me to work there, although I felt I would do better elsewhere. I got a little fit of sickness last summer, but I was well again in a month, and am very well since. During the sickness the Doctor recommended that I be taken out of the Yo-Ba swamps, and sent to a district near the hills. I was preparing to move to my new field of labour when 8 of us got orders to go a-begging ‘for a time.’ I got to Ireland two weeks ago with another priest, and 6 others went to U.S.A. I am here in Ballysimon for the past 12 days, and expect to be called on very soon. I have been visiting in Monaleen and Limerick since I came home. I had to see most of the priests and sisters and brothers in Limerick. I sometimes tire of talking and answering questions about China.

“I hope you will try to get many holy people to make intercession for me, that I may be a man and strive to be what a priest ought to be. Now you remember that preacher whose sermons were converting multitudes, but it was the lay-brother sitting on the steps of the pulpit, saying his Hail Marys that was doing all. Even though I thought it very hard to have to leave China, I feel happy. I feel the year here at home – I don’t expect to be more than a year at home – will fit me better for the work in China.

“The work in China, by the way, is not without results. I am glad to be able to tell you that the lawsuits which were making such a mess are quickly being reduced to a minimum.

“All at home well. The new house is almost finished. We are living in it. The only thing is that they are not well off at home. Janie is the one that is suffering; she has reason to be dissatisfied. Joe gone back to Maynooth. Joe will be all right, I feel sure.

“God bless you,

After his stay in Ireland, he headed back to China, in 1926, where the political theater was just beginning its dramatic ascension.

After Imperial China collapsed, in 1911, a declaration of the formal establishment of the Republic of China quickly followed, on January 1, 1912, with the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang, old form of Guomindang) rising to power after its formation later in the year by the merging of several Republican groups.

However, the Nationalists became infected with the anti-republic, anti-democratic, pro-revolution, pro-dictatorial Chinese Communists, who opened their first chapter, in 1921, in Shanghai, 106 Rue Wantz (former name of Xingye Road), with backing from the Communist International, headquartered in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Because of their sadistic predilections and proclivity for savagery, the Communists were lanced and drained from the ranks of the Nationalists, in April 1927.

In retaliation for the purge, the Communists attacked the city of Nanchang, the capital of Kiangsi (old form of Jiangxi) province, on August 1, 1927, at 2 in the morning, considered the founding of the People’s Liberation Army. After the Nanchang Uprising, which ignited the Chinese Civil War between the Nationalists and the Communists, thousands of Communist guerrilla forces spread throughout the neighboring mountains and countryside.

In that dangerous climate, the following year, in 1928, Father Leonard set out for his mission house, where he would be pastor, in Nan Feng, 30 miles south of Nancheng. The region around his parish, less than 100 miles south of the city of Nanchang, was infested with Communist guerrillas.

On July 9, 1929, he wrote to his uncle, Canon Joseph McCarthy, in County Limerick. It would be his last known letter.

“My Dear Uncle,

“Your letter dated April 23rd reached me only two weeks ago. I am very grateful for it, as I know how busy you have been with the repairs to your church.

“At the moment I am having a little rest here in Nan Feng. I don’t know to what extent I have earned it, to what extent I have given satisfaction to my Master. At all events, during the year He chose to work much good in souls that had shown no regard for Him. The outlook was as black as one could imagine a year ago. And yet it has been a rather fruitful year. One may call those events that brought baptism to old man Chow and Extreme Unction to Mary Li coincidences, but they were coincidences that God in His mercy arranged. And it was a further proof of God’s infinite mercy that old Anna Cheh, who perverted over twenty years ago, came back to the faith just a week before she died.

“God sent us a goodly number of well-disposed catechumens, some of whom have already received baptism and a few of whom seem to have been physically transformed by becoming children of God. God has worked a bigger miracle in some of them in six months than others have permitted Him to work in them in twenty years.

“One of the greatest consolations I had during the year was when the little flock insisted, if you please, on making a seven-days’ Retreat under my direction. The spirit with which they entered into it! It is simply marvelous what purity of intention and purity of life you find in the midst of so much filth; I think there are few things that express so well God’s goodness to us.

“These are only a few little notes about our year’s work. But there are other little notes I could write to you which would show the power of all the prayers that are said for us day after day. That’s all I have to say about our work except to ask you to keep it before the minds of your devout parishioners. We had no very big results here during the year, but there were ever so many little things – if one can so designate them – for which we can never thank God sufficiently.

“Your affectionate nephew,

“T.P. Leonard.”

On July 15, 1929, a few days after he had signed and sealed his letter, Father Leonard was still in bed, around 3 a.m., when he heard gunfire in the distance. Fully awake, he decided to rise, to begin his day and to celebrate Mass earlier than usual.

Around 5 that morning, dressed in his vestments, he approached the altar inside the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ Catholic Church, a wooden structure in San Gang. At the same time, a mob of Communist guerrilla soldiers surrounded the church, pushed their way inside through both doors and grabbed the priest.

In an effort to break free to prevent any sacrilege to the Blessed Sacrament, Father Leonard convinced them that he needed something from the Tabernacle. As soon as he opened the door, the Communists grabbed the ciborium and scattered the Hosts all over the sanctuary floor.

Furious, Father Leonard scolded the soldiers. In retaliation, one of them punched him in the face. As blood gushed from his mouth, soldiers ripped the vestments off the priest, tied him up, pushed him outside and demanded a ransom of $30,000, which he could not pay. The ragtag group of Communist soldiers dragged away Father Leonard, with a rope around his neck and without his glasses, knocked off during the scuffle.

That day, parishioners lost touch with him, but the next morning they found him at the Communists’ mountain hideaway, about 20 miles away from the church. Permitted to visit him, they found Father Leonard badly wounded, for he had been interrogated and tortured. And although suffering from intense pain, he was consumed with worry about the faithful in his parish, until his visitors convinced him that no one else had suffered from the attack by the Communists.

“Thank God. My mind is now easy,” he told them. “As for myself, it cannot be more than a matter of a few days.”

Those were his last words to his parishioners.



Frog-marched before a tribunal of the People’s Court, he was tried by three Communist “judges,” in their 20s, who declared the foreign devil guilty of being hostile to the People of China, of being friendly with the Nationalists, of being a foreign spy and of promoting religion.

After the reading of his guilty verdict, the Communists threw Father Leonard to the ground, where they viciously attacked him and brutally hacked him to death, with his head nearly severed from his body, on July 17, 1929.

Word soon reached the Columban Fathers’ mission that their confrere had been murdered by the Communists. Immediately, the priests dispatched a search party to recover the body, which they found, covered with wounds from head to heel.

The protomartyr of the Missionary Society of Saint Columban was returned to the mission, where he lay in repose for three days. On July 23, Father Patrick Dermody (1898-1990, Missionary Society of Saint Columban), Father Patrick Quigley (1904-79, Missionary Society of Saint Columban) and Father Diu, a native Chinese priest, celebrated a solemn Requiem Mass.

After the Mass, Father Leonard’s body, encased in a rough wooden coffin, was carried, in a scorching heat that reached nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit, for the three-mile procession to San Gang, where he was laid to rest on a hillside.

“Mortified in life; a witness to Christ in death,” one of the mourners said, as the coffin with the priest was lowered into the grave.

To send word of Father Leonard’s tragic ending, the Fathers in China dispatched a cablegram, on July 24, 1929, to the religious order’s main house in Ireland, and, in turn, the Fathers in Dalgan Park contacted the unsuspecting family in the Ballycraheen House, soon filled with sobs of intense grief and disbelief.

Upon learning of the death of his brother, William, who was in Australia, sent a cablegram back home: “Congratulations, Mam. You have become the mother of a martyr.”


Mourning extended to the Peafield House, where Richard commemorated his cousin, classmate and lifelong friend by hanging his portrait in a place of honor: the reception room wall, the first thing visitors would see when brought into the house.

A few years after his cousin’s death, Richard married and started a family. His son, John Martin Leonard (born 1934), grew up seeing the portrait of the serious-looking man with dark hair, thick eyebrows, glasses and a Fáinne Óir, a gold ring pinned to his lapel that showed he was a Gaeilgeoir, a fluent speaker of Gaelic.

Around the age of 10, John asked his mother, Mary Bridget Leonard (née O’Neill, 1899-1991), about the man, whom he had seen every day of his life.

That man is Father Timothy Leonard, she explained. Your father’s first cousin, who was born up the road at Ballycraheen. Furthermore, she continued, he was a martyr who had suffered a cruel death at the hands of the Red Communists, in China, in 1929.

Predicting that one day the martyred priest would be raised to the sainthood, John’s mother, a deeply religious woman with a great devotion to the man in the portrait, encouraged her son to pray to him.

And, through the years, John did remember him in his prayers, hoping that he would become a saint. With the prerequisite of a miracle waived for a martyr, beatification would simple, it would seem, because the only requirement would be proof that he died for the faith. But his canonization has not yet come to pass.

Inheriting his parents’ love and honor for Father Leonard, not only has John assumed the role as executor of the priest’s legacy, working for his beatification, but he has traveled to that remote hillside in China, located the original burial place, and erected a Celtic cross with a small altar at the gravesite, which has become a holy place where local Catholics pray.

    I’ve commented once before that I knew Columban missionaries, born in Ireland, who were expelled from China in the late 40’s, early 50’s. They were courageous men. I met two of them at a retreat house they ran in Derby, NY. They don’t ordain them like that anymore, but I know Chinese Catholics have faith made out of steel. Xi Jinping doesn’t have a chance against them.


    YES! Here is a holy priest to be emulated! And there is also the marvelous Fr. Willie Doyle, S.J. who was another holy Irish priest that deserves canonization. Sadly, instead, we get the praising of some post VIIs….who are not of the same stripe shall we say.


    Beautiful story! Being half Irish I could invasion the family table, and joy at the young priests return home. The tears shed later must have been severe and copious, at the news of his death. Interesting that the young priest held up, being a man, a great importance. He knew what it meant to have dignity in the role God gave him in life as a man. Wonder it would be for young men today to esteem such qualities. Let alone a calling for the priesthood. God bless this Holy Preist.


    A beautiful story. It’s a coincidence that I had recently begun reading “The New Glories of the Catholic Church” which is a similar recounting of the martyrs in Asia during the 1800s.


    Thank God that, through the death of martyrs, many a Communist would have witnessed self-sacrificial love and been converted. I recall hearing a story of a young Russian Communist soldier who was about to kill a Catholic woman who calmly awaited the death blow, but he couldn’t do it — he felt himself physically held back from delivering the blow — and then he burst into tears and fled the scene. He later escaped from Russia a became a believer in Jesus.

    No one is beyond hope, and no one is “a devil”. All can be saved, for such were some of us. Our job is to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, do good to those who hate us, and pray for those who abuse us. Easier said than done, and yet it is the command of the Lord Jesus. And Jesus said, “If you love me, you will obey my commandments”.


    Compare this holy priest to Cardinal Dolan. A life of mortification, penance and love for Our Lord and Our Lady. Dolan, very little penance, no humility and gluttony. He loves notoriety and to be loved by the world. This world is not worthy of men like Fr.Leonard.


    This is the kind of historical narrative that simply is not supposed to be told in this day and age. And that is the reason it needs to be spread far and wide.

      The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church suffered horribly under Soviet Communism, but many martyrs like Blessed Vasyl Velychovsky are brilliant stars in the court of heaven.


      ‘Tis true! It brought the tears. Knowing how the Irish love their land, it is even more of a heroic virtue in the heart of
      this priest, Father Leonard, so good, to leave for foreign China. He left behind his big loving family to win souls for heaven and ended up being butchered by Communist devils. How they do hate Catholic truth and light! And as Our Lady of Fatima prophesied, their ‘errors’ are spreading throughout the world. Their errors which stem from atheism! They lack the grace of God and it doesn’t look like there is any stopping it … and there won’t be any stopping it without the consecration of Russia, the source of the errors (after hell), to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by the Pope and the Bishops. Yes, it needs to be spread around because most of the people are asleep. They don’t think it can happen to them ….

    And in the United States certainly the most stunning and critical personal account remains Whittaker Chamber’s eloquent Witness, a volume that continues to thoroughly irritate the American Left which remains totally wrapped in the sullen stubborn embrace of an historical philo-communism. One only need recall the bald-faced Soviet propaganda of New York Times writer, Walter Duranty, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1932 for journalism, for his glorification of the Stalinist state, a template that continued even after the brutal occupation of Eastern Europe, the 1948-1949 Berlin blockade, and the suppression of popular movements in East Germany and Hungary (1956). Voices in the West and America that raised the specter of Communist infiltration here not only into our politics, but into our religion and culture, our entertainment and our educational establishment, were shouted down as “right wing extremists” who did not respect “free speech” and who “looked for Commies under every bed,” or, more recently, as “racists” and “fascists.”

    The late Senator Joseph McCarthy, a Catholic from Wisconsin, was pilloried and basically had his character assassinated as a “drunken and thuggish right wing extremist” who “made up facts” and used his Senate position to badger and batter innocent victims of his “rabid anti-Communism.” Yet, as we know now from the release of the revelatory Venona Transcripts (documenting Communist espionage in the United States) and the opening of the old Soviet archives, not to mention such blockbuster studies as Professor Arthur Herman’s Joseph McCarthy: Reexamining the Life and Legacy of America’s Most Hated Senator, and M. Stanton Evans’ Blacklisted by History, McCarthy was essentially correct in  his understanding of the continuous, long-range infiltration and subversion of American institutions. It was even worse than he imagined….

    What he did not and could not foresee were the ideological vicissitudes of post-Communist Marxism and its ironic triumph in the West, at almost the same time it was dying an ignominious death in Russia and the former Soviet satellite states in the East. Just as the Stalinist brand and its Moscow-based septuagenarian commissars, once proudly reviewing Red military might from their perches in the Kremlin, disappeared into the dustbin of history after the failure of the final desperate KGB-attempted coup in August 1991, the once-exiled and persecuted descendants of Leon Trotsky staged a seemingly miraculous rebirth—but it was a rebirth in the West, a rebirth that had been slowly and surely cultivated and solidified in the minds of thousands of educators and artists over decades [on this see Dr.Paul Gottfried’s excellent study, The Strange Death of Marxism].

    In so many ways, superficially, it did not resemble the stodgy imagery of the creaky and bureaucratic, top-heavy Soviet state. It rejected the innate “conservatism” of Soviet Communism and the remarkably old-fashioned “morality” coming from Moscow (e.g., persecution of homosexuals, insistence on traditional marriage, etc.).  It was zealously internationalist; it understood the insights of earlier Marxist theoreticians like Antonio Gramsci and Georg Lukacs, that the West could not be defeated by military confrontation, but rather must be so through a cultural “long-march” through its institutions, through its churches, through its schools and universities, through its entertainment industry and media, and, most critically, through the transmogrification of its very language and accepted manner of communication. To accomplish these objectives was, in effect, to win the seventy-year-old struggle, a victory that Soviet Communism had been unable to achieve.

    Arguably, one of the most significant victories of this subversive process came with the holding of the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s, at which the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre identified several major “time bombs” buried in some of the equivocal language and resulting praxis following the council (and circulating for years previously just below the surface in countries like France and Germany; cf. Ralph Wiltgen, The Rhine Follows into the Tiber). The Church since the 19th century had been the most dedicated and zealous opponent of Marxism and one of the chief obstacles to its eventual success. Blunting that voice was critical for Marxist success.

    Politically, in a fascinating twist of history, the two major supposedly intellectual antipodes in American society—the openly cultural Marxist Left, with their media and political minions, and the Neoconservatives, with their media and political minions, despite their continuous shadow boxing and bickering over Obamacare, taxes, trade, and civil rights–both owe their profound origins more to that man bludgeoned to death on Stalin’s orders in Mexico City in 1940, Leon Trotsky, than to either Joe Stalin or Thomas Jefferson.

    Both have joined in what at first appeared an incongruous “alliance” in manifesting a virulent hatred of post-Soviet, post-Communist Russia, and in particular, towards its president Vladimir Putin.

    But is it really that incongruous?

    Much of the current hatred for Russia and its president, twenty-seven years after the collapse of Communism, may be attributed to what post-1991 Russia has become. Certainly, it is no model or copy of the United States or any of the Western European EU states—and that is a major part of the problem: Russia’s conspicuous unwillingness to submit to the political and economic tutelage—and control—of Bruxelles and Wall Street and the managers along the Potomac.

    A much larger issue—and an issue fully realized by both the American Left and the pseudo-Right Neoconservatives—is the direction culturally and religiously in which Putin’s Russia—and other Eastern Europe nations like Poland and Hungary—seem headed. It is not just the news, as reported for instance by Franklin Graham and other conservative Christians, that post-Communist Russia has experienced a revival of traditional Christianity and opened 28,000 new churches since 1991 (plus restoring hundreds closed by the Reds); it is not just the fact that Russia has criminalized homosexual proselytization among Russian youth and has enacted laws favoring the nuclear family (making same sex marriage illegal); it is not just the fact that the Russian Duma has passed one of the strongest anti-abortion laws of any European state; it is not just the fact that the Russian Ministry of Culture has sponsored dozens of blockbuster anti-Communist and pro-traditional Christian films; it is not just the fact that Russia has kicked George Soros’s subversive organizations out of the country.


    A new poll by The Levada Research Center reveals that the number of Russians who identify as atheists has fallen by 50 percent in just three years; the predominiant religion being Orthodoxy.

    No, it is not just any one of these actions or numerous others that have raised the ire of John McCain, Lindsay Graham and Max Boot, in tacit alliance with Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer and CNN; it is all of them.

    And the drowning chorus in the American media is that “Russia is violating ‘human rights’,” that “Putin is a thug and dictator” (despite recent national elections that more than 1,000 independent observers found fair), that “Russia wants to re-establish the Soviet empire” (a complete misquoting of something Putin said several years ago when he commented that the sudden break-up of the old Soviet state was a tragedy economically, ethnically and socially—with millions of ethnic Russians arbitrarily consigned to new countries, and with a total disregard for economic realities—he was not lamenting the fall of the Communist state).

    As we look at the anniversary of the establishment of one of the bloodiest regimes in human history and what has happened since its demise, and the curious juxtaposition of American political forces in a “united front” against its successor, Pat Buchanan’s remarkable words may seem apt: “In the new ideological Cold War, whose side is God on now?”

    During the past year Russian President Vladimir Putin has participated in several formal commemorations of the victims of Communism, dedicating “Walls of Grief” to the memory of millions of lives that perished under that infamy and denouncing Marxism and its crimes (i.e., at Butovo, Sretenskii). He was accompanied on each occasion by leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church which in so many ways became the underground and “martyr” church under seven decades of Communist barbarity.

    One such recent visit by Putin was to the newly-reconstructed Sretenskii Monastery in Moscow, built on the site of what once was the headquarters of the Soviet KGB and NKVD secret police, Lubyanka, now demolished. The monastery is devoted to the New Martyrs—those thousands of Christians murdered by Bolsheviks following the 1917 revolution. The new church’s decoration reflects this. Around the dome are illustrations of key saints of the Russian Orthodox Church, among whom are Tsar Nicholas II and his family, symbols of suffering at the hands of Bolshevism.

    As Professor Paul Robinson describes it:

    Behind and above the altar, one can see a depiction of Christ’s crucifixion. But around the cross are not merely the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, but also some more of the New Martyrs. On the far right are a man and his two sons who initially supported the revolution and joined the Red Guards, but who then refused to renounce their Christian faith and were shot. On the left is, among others, Grand Duchess Elizabeth, who became a nun after the assassination of her husband Grand Duke Sergei, and who was murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1918. And on the far left is a woman who during the Great Terror brought food and clothes to those detained by the NKVD, until she in turn was arrested and shot… In May of this year, he attended the service at which the church was consecrated. Our guide spoke of Putin as the former head of the FSB, the successor organization to the Soviet secret services who executed the New Martyrs. Our guide stated that by coming to the service and bowing and praying before its altar, Putin in effect repented on behalf of those secret services and asked for forgiveness. There is little doubt in my mind that Putin understood perfectly what his presence symbolized and what message he was sending all across Russia.

    No greater contrast and symbolism marks the tremendous changes in Russia since 1991—but it is precisely those changes that so threaten the Western secularist and globalist elites and the Marxist internationalists like George Soros. Russia has become the special target—but why?

    A few years back writer Solange Hertz recounted in the pages of THE REMNANT (April 2, 2014) the growing interest in the Apparitions at Fatima and the Messages of Our Lady regarding Russia. Our Lady commanded via Sister Lucia that “ ‘the Holy Father…make, and to order that in union with him and at the same time, all the bishops of the world, make the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart,’ promising to convert it because of this day of prayer and worldwide reparation.” The heightened discussion about Fatima not only touches upon the de-Christianization of the West, but on the growing and vibrant rebirth of faith in Russia and what role it might play in the future. Our Blessed Mother, despite seven decades of Communist persecution, is now more central to the faith of the Russian people than ever before.

    As Hertz asks:

    “When our Lady asked the Pope to consecrate Russia in union with ‘all the bishops of the world’ is there not reason to suspect that she may have been including the schismatic bishops of Orthodoxy, who despite their illegitimacy, are nonetheless valid bishops? Would not their willing participation in such a Consecration in conjunction with the Pope of Rome constitute of itself a healing of the [millenia-old] schism?   Despite its … longstanding disobedience, Russia still has a heart which can be appealed to, and essentially that heart is the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Lady who appeared so spectacularly on that nation’s behalf at Fatima.”

    On various occasions President Vladimir Putin has indicated that he recognizes the peculiar position that his nation may possibly occupy in what could well be an eventual miracle of faith. Of course, there are considerable, very difficult obstacles, both historical and theological, to overcome, including the age old hostility between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church.

    As quoted by THE REMNANT (March 15, 2014), Putin spoke at the international Valdai Forum (September 2013), and while his words were largely ignored by the Mainstream Media, acute observers wondered what they would mean for the future:

    “We can see how many Euro-Atlantic countries are rejecting their roots,the Christian values that form the basis of Western civilization. They are reneging on moral principles and their traditional identity: national, cultural, religious and even sexual. They put in place policies that put on equal basis traditional families with LGBT families;faith in God is equal to faith in Satan. This excess of political correctnesshas led to people talking seriously of registering political parties whose aim is to promote pedophilia.

    “In many European countries people are embarrassed to talk about their religion.The Christian feast holidays are abolished or called something different; their essence is hidden, as well as their moral foundation. And people are trying aggressively to export this model worldwide.

    “I am convinced that this opens a direct path to degradation and primitivism, resulting in a profound demographic and moral crisis.What better evidence of this moral crisis than the loss of the ability to reproduce?Today almost all developed nations are no longer able to reproduce themselves, even with the help of immigration.

    “Without the values in Christianity and other world religions, without moral standards that have formed over thousands of years, people will inevitably lose their human dignity.We consider it natural and right to defend these values. We must respect the right of every minority to be different,but the rights of the majority should not be questioned. At the same time we see attempts to launch the standard of a one world government and blur the institutions of international law and the national sovereignty model.Such a one world, standardized government does not need sovereign states, it needs vassals. Historically this represents a rejection of our own identity and of the universal diversity given by God.”

    When was the last time we heard any Western leader evoke these topics in this manner? Clearly, even if Putin’s remarks are politically colored, they do indicate that something significant may be going on.

    Fatima scholars such as Fr. Nicholas Gruner (see the interview on Youtube with the late John Vennari of Catholic Family News) and the Society of St. Pius X’s journal, The Angelus, have explored these questions (the March-April 2018 of The Angelus is largely dedicated to Russia and the faith, especially the essay by Andrew J. Clarendon, “A Star from the East: Dostoevsky and Fatima”).

    Can we now paraphrase Pat Buchanan: Who is now the real enemy of the historic traditions and beliefs of the Christian West? “Light from the East?” Perhaps….

      The absolutely fanatical and pathological hatred of Russia that we see in the left-liberal elites of this country and Europe is rooted in their awareness that Russia is the only significant obstacle to the triumph of the New World Order, and its anti-Christian, anti-Western, and pro-LGBT agenda.

      It’s time to forget the past. The old Soviet Union was our enemy. But the new Russia isn’t.


      Certainly gives the ole noodle a lot to ponder. I had always imagined Putin as a KGB thug. Maybe the thug aspect is to fight back against those who want to destroy Christianity and Western Civilization. Weak men would not survive against these forces.


      World War I officially ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, not 1917. The US entered that war in 1917, which was necessary to it ending as it did, which guaranteed World War II.


      Not long ago, it occurred to me what the formal consecration of Russia might mean for us here in the United States. When it happens, Russia recognizes the primacy of the bishop of Rome, and becomes Catholic; not, however, Catholics of the Latin Rite (which has never had much of a presence there). Rather, what we’ll most likely see is the rise of the newest and largest Eastern Rite, and it will be priests and religious of this new Russian Rite (formerly the Russian Orthodox) who are instrumental in re-evangelizing much of the West. Here in the U.S. (or what’s left of it), you will then have large numbers of people who still identify themselves as American, but who attend a church where the liturgical rite (and some of the prayers) are in the language of America’s Cold War enemy. For those who still cling fiercely to American exceptionalism, the prospect of this has to be in ‘worst nightmare’ territory.


      I am old enough to remember well the cold war, the berlin wall, the endless list of atrocities committed by communist regimes, all of which could have been the wall paper for the most of the 20th century. That being so, it took me a little while to adjust to the changing reality of Russia after the USSR dissolved. But since the arrival of Putin, Russia is not what we once understood it to be. As the above excellent article indicates, Russia is rediscovering and re-embracing what, for Christians, is of fundamental value and importance, but which the West has been in a rush to abandon–to its own peril.
      While Russia cannot be said to be our “Buddy,” I don’t think it needs to be our enemy. If we look closely, we can see that the our worst enemy is here among us.

      Anyone notice the theme of the Met Ball idiocy this year? Heavenly Bodies and The Catholic Imagination. Fr James Martin and Cardinal Dolan were consultants in this travesty. Katy Perry had the gall dress as an angel, supposedly St Michael. Madonna was in pseudo Franciscan habit…I can’t go on. They are mocking us with this spectacle. I am so disgusted.       I’m unclear as to what a ‘personal meeting’ actually entails? Did he meet her ‘privately’ i.e., an official diary appointment, one to one? Or did he meet her while he was walking among a group of visitors to the Vatican?
      I have never heard of this young woman , and I try to keep up with what’s happening. So there’s a good chance, if it was the latter, he was equally clueless.

      Imagine anything you like, Martin. At this point, imagining the current pontiff with a Margarita in a swimming pool, while Katy Perry is ranting “Hot ‘N Cold” in front of him clad in a cardinal’s cassock with nothing underneath it, is as much valid now to me as seeing the two of them holding hands looking in sheer adoration at a Madonna of El Greco in the Vatican Museum. At this point, nothing is beyond the possible.

      I was going to say that the people running the Vatican are the biggest buffoons on earth. Then I heard Dr. Robert or “Robby”, as Katy Perry called him speak. A “Doctor” groveling at the feet of a pop singer and proclaiming her wisdom on the basis of Twitter followers was astounding. Then Katy Perry spoke and she always speaks condescendingly while uttering phrases that are profoundly sophomoric and moronic.

      What a perfect match of venue, Doctor and resident moron.

      Anyone notice the theme of the Met Ball idiocy this year? Heavenly Bodies and The Catholic Imagination. Fr James Martin and Cardinal Dolan were consultants in this travesty. Katy Perry had the gall dress as an angel, supposedly St Michael. Madonna was in pseudo Franciscan habit…I can’t go on. They are mocking us with this spectacle. I am so disgusted. Sweet advocate Mary, pray for us. St. Michael, defend us.

      I’m unclear as to what a ‘personal meeting’ actually entails? Did he meet her ‘privately’ i.e., an official diary appointment, one to one? Or did he meet her while he was walking among a group of visitors to the Vatican?
      I have never heard of this young woman , and I try to keep up with what’s happening. So there’s a good chance, if it was the latter, he was equally clueless.

      Imagine anything you like, Martin. At this point, imagining the current pontiff with a Margarita in a swimming pool, while Katy Perry is ranting “Hot ‘N Cold” in front of him clad in a cardinal’s cassock with nothing underneath it, is as much valid now to me as seeing the two of them holding hands looking in sheer adoration at a Madonna of El Greco in the Vatican Museum. At this point, nothing is beyond the possible.

      I was going to say that the people running the Vatican are the biggest buffoons on earth. Then I heard Dr. Robert or “Robby”, as Katy Perry called him speak. A “Doctor” groveling at the feet of a pop singer and proclaiming her wisdom on the basis of Twitter followers was astounding. Then Katy Perry spoke and she always speaks condescendingly while uttering phrases that are profoundly sophomoric and moronic.

      How do you answer family members (elders whom you must respect) when they rabidly defend Francis? For example, my pious in-laws staunchly support not just Francis but all the post-conciliar popes. They think Francis is humble for living in the Vatican hotel and consider him practically a saint. Anyone else in this uncomfortable situation?
      Of course by comparison with the terrible apostasy and suffering afflicting Holy Mother Church, my petty complaint is infinitesimal. Still, peace and strength through prayer and family life are great supports during this maelstrom; I don’t want to upset my family members BUT can’t lie or pretend to approve of these infamies. Just wanted to hear some thoughts on this question. It must be pretty common.

      We are an Easter People – but we have to also carry our Cross .. and this is our Cross today… The holy Eucharist, Confession and the Rosary are our weapons!





      Do you ever feel as if you are in a sinking submarine, and the depth gauge has long since pegged in the red, the hull is groaning, rivets are popping, the faces of your shipmates look drained and hollow from the stress, and you are wondering if you’ll hit bottom before you reach crush depth, and if so, then what?

      I suggest that laity who wish to give themselves to God.. as lay consecrated or Third Order,or simply believers – start uniting their forces and building next to Monasteries or helping Monasteries to be built … or at least get into the same area—

      In other words we the Catholic Laity who are not being fed as we should must act… the time for shock is over – by now we have seen and we know what is happening.

      We must raise up new communties and move to them… and in that community with either an authentic Bishop at the centre of priest…
      who will still celebrate the Mass the way he should… and give the Sacraments — it will be the way forward to strengthen us with The Lord…



      Well, maybe if enough folks got serious with their hatha yoga, and really buckled down their pranayama breathing, maybe, just maybe…
      Or, the Rosery.
      Other than that, it seems Francis is on an unstoppable roll.


      The Pope, putting her in high profile in The Vatican, is scandal as well as inappropriate, to say the least. When will he be removed from His Chair! BTW: if God cast The Devil into Hell, what makes her think she will reach “The Pearly Gates?” People will do anything for attention; but what’s Pope Francis’ excuse? Katy Perry will be very surprised when she reaches Hell if she does not repent.


      Tell me I didn’t see what I saw, Katy Perry(whoever that is) was giving a talk in the hall where the pope, cardinals and other bishops gather for various meetings, and was sitting in the seat the pope sits in.

      That Katy Perry supports LGBT pales in comparison to her proud and defiant practice of cannibalism, although cannibalism is not the word she, nor her elite friends, use to describe this practice. But no matter the culinary degrees possessed by the Chef, no matter the skill-set the chef has with the skillet, consumption of human flesh is, and always will be, cannibalism. Katy Perry brags about this “special dining experience,” and is shocked that it is out-lawed in America. In France, she says, sensible people are smart enough to eat what they choose. This information about Perry’s devilish dining fetishes did not happen under a bushel. Certainly the Pope knew this.



      Sounds like diabolical possession to me. Do we still believe in that? We used to hear that the greatest triumph of the Devil was in convincing people that he doesn’t exist.



      Stay in the Church? Which one, the one you go to, with a Traditional Latin Mass, or the one with the silly middle age folk (and old) playing tambourines and guitars with the altar girls. The latter is the only option available to many us. How can that even be the same Church as the one you attend? Splain that.



      I don’t know what is going on in the US (assuming you are from the US). In my Archdiocese of Vancouver it is very unusual to find a NO Mass that is not conducted with reverence and devotion. Granted, not every parish has the most uplifting music – have yet to see “silly middle age folk (and old) playing tambourines” – but, for the most part I have little to complain about. Am sorry to hear things are so bad in your area. PS One parish in Vancouver offers the Traditional Latin Mass.


      Its not only the US … it is very much in the western nations of the world…
      ….. we must support our good Bishops and priests and that means also talking clearly….



      The Japanese Catholics went centuries, often with no priests at all. Yes, stay in the Church. And if you have nothing but heretics offering sham Masses, then do as Bishop Schneider advised: Move to where the Mass is or at least drive great distances every Sunday to find one.





      Might not be worth offering, but there are really great Catholic resources on the computer. Type in Catholic Mass, or Catholic homilies, or better yet, Fulton Sheen. There is no shortage in available quality uplifting material. Alas, confession and Mass
      partication is only done in person.





      I understand that it is not a flippant response. It’s just that for some individuals, such as me, moving is more or less out of the realm of possibility. And for some people in some localities, the TLM is not drivable in practice.

      We have a right to the true Mass. There is no law or precept which forces us to attend an illicit Mass. If you live too far from a TLM, it might be once, twice, or four times per year, whatever you can reasonably manage. On the Sundays when you can’t attend the TLM, sanctify the Sunday by saying the Rosary. If you normally say the Rosary every day, then say the full 15 decades on the Sunday. Spend an hour praying the Rosary or reading religious material.

      In the above situation, the challenge is really and truly sanctifying the Sunday and not sliding into a pattern where Sunday becomes just another day of the week. Unfortunately, the current crisis presents us with many challenges for the sanctification of our souls.








    Cardinal Dolan: Met Gala was not ‘offensive or blasphemous at all’

    NEW YORK, New York, May 9, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Cardinal Timothy Dolan has defended the controversial 2018 Met Gala as “a celebration of what we call the evangelization of culture.”

    “I did not find the spirit of the evening to be offensive or blasphemous at all,” the cardinal told Crux of the event where a Victoria’s Secret model dressed as a sexy cardinal alongside dozens of other celebrities in sultry Catholic-themed outfits.

    “Was some of it edgy? Yes, but I never met any person that seemed to be snippy or snotty about the Church, or who intended anything to be offensive,” said Dolan.

    He continued:

    “We could have had a lecture at the museum on the Catholic imagination and not too many people may have showed up, especially the crowd from last night. But when you do an evening like that, you get everybody.”

    “Boy, you talk about the public square – with some of the movers and shakers who were there – and they’re reminded of positive memories of the Church and of devotions, prayers, traditions, and liturgies, as many of them told me they were. This could only be for the good of the Church.”

    “I was really happy to have been there. If this helps people rediscover those roots, then hallelujah, it’s a winner.”

    Other celebrity costumes at the Met Gala included a sexualized Blessed Virgin Mary, Rihanna dressed as a pope, and “flesh-flashing” outfits adorned with Christian symbols, as Piers Morgan put it.

    The Post-Vatican II Church of Materialism



    The shift began with the Second Vatican Council, which produced “Gaudium et spes,” a pastoral document concerning economics and politics in the modern world, particularly regarding the poor. In the preface, the council, “proclaiming the noble destiny of man and championing the Godlike seed which has been sown in him, offers to mankind the honest assistance of the Church in fostering that brotherhood of all men.”

    Statements from other sections reinforce that emphasis.

    “Never has the human race enjoyed such an abundance of wealth, resources and economic power, and yet a huge proportion of the world’s citizens are still tormented by hunger and poverty, while countless numbers suffer from total illiteracy,” from the introduction.

    “According to the almost unanimous opinion of believers and unbelievers alike, all things on earth should be related to man as their center and crown. For by his innermost nature man is a social being, and unless he relates himself to others he can neither live nor develop his potential,” from Chapter I, “The Dignity Of The Human Person.”

    “Therefore, there must be made available to all men everything necessary for leading a life truly human, such as food, clothing, and shelter; the right to choose a state of life freely and to found a family, the right to education, to employment, to a good reputation, to respect, to appropriate information, to activity in accord with the upright norm of one’s own conscience, to protection of privacy and rightful freedom even in matters religious. Hence, the social order and its development must invariably work to the benefit of the human person,” from Chapter II, “The Community of Mankind.”

    Monsignor Brunero Gherardini, dean emeritus of the Pontifical Lateran University’s theological faculty, sharply criticized “Gaudium et spes” for its fundamentally anthropocentric approach, ambiguity and sloppy theology in his 2012 work, Vatican II: At the Roots of an Equivoque, written in Italian. “The whole document is a sequel of shocking proclamations, whose sheer number makes exemplification a difficult choice,” wrote Gherardini, who worked at the Sacred Congregation of Seminaries during the council.

    Gherardini concluded by warning about an excessively intimate relationship between Catholicism and the world: “The frontiers have come so close and to such an extent, that they have become welded. What the Church says and does, she says and does it for the world; and what the world is doing in its drive toward progress, is to the advantage of the Church.”

    Pope Paul VI amplified “Gaudium et spes’ ” approach in his encyclical “Populorum Progresio,” which announced the formation of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and solidified the Vatican’s commitment to the material development of poorer nations through international cooperation. But the encyclical addressed more than immediate logistics.

    “The ultimate goal is a full-bodied humanism,” it stated. “And does this not mean the fulfillment of the whole man and of every man? … True humanism points the way toward God and acknowledges the task to which we are called, the task which offers us the real meaning of human life. Man is not the ultimate measure of man. Man becomes truly man only by passing beyond himself.”

    Achieving that goal would mean using existing international agencies — or creating new ones with overarching power — to manage the world’s economic and political development.

    “Such international collaboration among the nations of the world certainly calls for institutions that will promote, coordinate and direct it, until a new juridical order is firmly established and fully ratified,” the encyclical said. “We give willing and wholehearted support to those public organizations that have already joined in promoting the development of nations, and We ardently hope that they will enjoy ever growing authority.”

    Pope Benedict XVI took that concept to its logical conclusion in another encyclical, “Caritas in Veritate,” which advocated giving the United Nations power to direct both international and domestic economic policies:

    “In the face of the unrelenting growth of global interdependence, there is a strongly felt need … for a reform of the United Nations Organization, and likewise of economic institutions and international finance, so that the concept of the family of nations can acquire real teeth. … To manage the global economy … to bring about integral and timely disarmament, food security and peace; to guarantee the protection of the environment and to regulate migration: for all this, there is urgent need of a true world political authority…”

    This authority, the encyclical stated, must “observe consistently the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity,” “seek to establish the common good” and “have the authority to ensure compliance with its decisions from all parties, and also with the coordinated measures adopted in various international forums.”

    What is this authority’s ultimate mission? A “directed” global economy designed to “open up the unprecedented possibility of large-scale redistribution of wealth on a world-wide scale,” stated the encyclical — including “a worldwide redistribution of energy resources, so that countries lacking those resources can have access to them.”

    In promoting such an agency, “Caritas in Veritate” subtly redefines the Catholic Church’s primary role from proclaiming the Gospel to ensuring economic benefits for all — or, at least, redefining the Gospel in materialist terms. Benedict’s encyclical cites “Populorum Progresio” often and refers to Paul VI’s ideas in this statement:

    “(T)he whole Church, in all her being and acting … is engaged in promoting integral human development. She has a public role over and above her charitable and educational activities: all the energy she brings to the advancement of humanity and of universal fraternity is manifested when she is able to operate in a climate of freedom.”

    Benedict’s encyclical even presumes that global economic management through a “true world political authority” can achieve at least partial spiritual harmony:

    “When animated by charity, commitment to the common good … has a place within the testimony of divine charity that paves the way for eternity through temporal action. Man’s earthly activity, when inspired and sustained by charity, contributes to the building of the universal city of God, which is the goal of the history of the human family.”

    Thus does “Caritas in Veritate” solidify the materialist transformation of Catholic identity. Independent Catholic journalist Lee Penn described the encyclical’s magnitude:

    “Caritas in Veritate should be seen as what it is: a theological and political earthquake. The Roman Catholic Church, which was once a guardian of tradition worldwide, now wishes to use radical means (a ‘true world political authority’) for its own ends. It is as if Benedict wishes to mount and ride a wild beast, and imagines that he (and those who believe as he does) will be able to direct that fierce beast’s course. Ordinary prudence – even without reference to the dire symbolism of Revelation 17:3-18 – should have warned the Vatican against such folly. Europeans have already tried using radical means to support conservative goals; the results of that 20th century experiment in Italy, Portugal, Germany, Spain, and Vichy France are written in letters of blood and fire.

    “Seeking a world government that is governed and limited by natural law and Christian tradition is akin to seeking dry water or square circles. Lord Acton, a Catholic historian in 19th Century England, made a warning that the Vatican ought to have heeded: ‘Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.  Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority.’ Humanly speaking, no power could be more absolute than that of ‘world ruler,’ and such is the post which (despite the fig-leaf invocation of ‘subsidiarity’) Benedict proposes to create (all parentheses in original).”

    But how do the ideas expressed in “Gaudium et spes” and the two encyclicals work when practiced?


    Latin America, with its long history of Catholicism and mass poverty, would seem to provide the ideal environment. In 2010, 39 percent of the world’s Catholics lived in Latin America. Yet even as a counterweight to Liberation Theology, Catholicism’s economic modernism not only fails to solve intractable social problems but contributes to massive conversions to conservative Protestant denominations, especially Pentecostal ones.

    A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2014 showed that 69 percent of Latin Americans considered themselves Catholic, compared to 92 percent in 1970. Meanwhile, the proportion of Protestants rose from four percent in 1970 to 19 percent in 2014. In 1970, Catholicism claimed at least 90 percent of the population in all but five of the 19 countries surveyed. Yet by 2014, the percentage of Catholics fell by double digits in all but one country, with 11 reporting declines larger than 20 percent.

    Central America reported the most dramatic descents: 41 percent in Guatemala, 43 percent in both Nicaragua and El Salvador, and 47 percent in Honduras — by far the largest in Latin America.

    Catholic author Leon Podles, after reading Jon Wolseth’s Jesus and the Gang: Youth Violence and Christianity in Urban Honduras, offered these reasons for the massive decline:

    “Progressive Catholicism emphasizes community and solidarity with the poor and blames the problems of the poor on structural inequities, especially economic oppression.  Catholic youth groups in the barrio follow this analysis and try to identify with the poor. But they are fearful of identifying with the poor who are gang members. Catholic youth blame gangsterism on social inequities, but do not explain why they themselves have not followed the path of the gangsters.

    “Pentecostals set up a harsh dichotomy between the world ruled by Satan and the church ruled by Christ.  Young men who want to give up the destructive and self-destructive life of the gangs can have a conversion experience and dedicate themselves to a new life, totally rejecting the old one and separating themselves from it. They have to change their lives to convince both the church and their old gangs that they are cristianos. If a man leaves a gang, he is killed by the gang, unless he becomes a cristiano. Gangs usually let Pentecostal former gang members alone if the former members demonstrate that their lives have really changed.

    “Catholics, with their rhetoric of solidarity, do not offer gang members the opportunity for a clean break that Pentecostals offer. Catholics blame society for individual problems; Pentecostals stress individual responsibility.”

    Not only gang members face the demand for personal accountability.

    “As a Baptist who has traveled to Guatemala on four mission trips, I can tell you that one reason evangelical churches are growing there because they take alcoholism seriously (which is a huge problem in Mayan communities),” Ryan Booth wrote to Rod Dreher’s blog at The American Conservative in 2013. “While Baptist attitudes in the U.S. toward alcohol continue to relax, Baptists in Latin America don’t drink at all.”

    A Brazilian named Alat explained the evangelicals’ appeal on Dreher’s blog:

    “They are very, very morally strict, which is why they grow so fast in the poorest areas: they give order to the disordered lives of the very poor, who come from generations of poverty and broken homes and have never known anything better. They take a huge portion of the poor’s meagre income in tithes and ‘gifts’… and even then the poor are better off in these churches, because the order the church gives, much like a military boot camp, helps them to plan for the future, educate themselves, not fall into drugs, not have multiple children out of wedlock, etc.

    “And this is not just inwards. The politicians elected by the Evangelicals are at the forefront of the resistance to homosexual ‘marriage,’ to abortion, and most of the left’s culture war agenda. In my own country, abortion would have been legalized a few years ago if not for the resistance organized by the Evangelical politician-preachers across almost all parties – a fight in which, by the way, the Catholic hierarchy was entirely silent. (emphasis added) If the Church retreats from these issues, the pull of the Evangelical Protestant churches will only INCREASE throughout Latin America (capitals in original).”

    Alat concluded with a statement that represents, if not the epitaph for Latin American Catholicism, an indictment of Catholicism’s economic modernism.

    “To sum up,” Alat wrote, “as we say here, when ‘the Church chose the poor, the poor chose the Protestants.’ ”

      I agree — is there not some way that so many of us might watch this important debate and gain from it — and use it in our work with others?!!! We do so need the clarity and good teaching & reasoning that we can gain from this AOTM debate!!! Why keep it from us? We need good, solid food!!!!       Please, cannot the Remnant Newspaper do something to stop AOTM burying the evolution debate “for ever”. It’s the most sought after program for Catholic everywhere, and AOTM have just made a headline news item that it will never be recorded.



      Believe in evolution and you deny the Immaculate Conception. Even if you believe in original sin, if Adam and Eve were “conceived” in an animal then they were conceived without original sin. So Our Lady is not THE Immaculate Conception. Ergo evolution is heresy.


      Why oh Why is this so rare program on evolution not being recorded???



      I was going to ask if Remnant could record this discussion at the AOTM.
      We could all pay a fee to watch, just like the Remnant did for the Catholic Conference.

      Father Ripperger has a fine little book out called “The Metaphysics of Evolution.” He demonstrates how this foolish theory violates some First Principles. Not an easy read but Father shows that there are gaps in the logic of evolutionary theory that cannot be overcome.

      There is an excellent Documentary on Netflix right now “Is Genesis History?” It proves scientifically the Bible is true History.


      The second law of thermodynamics is one of the most fundamental laws of nature, having profound implications. In essence, it says this: The second law – The level of disorder in the universe is steadily increasing. Systems tend to move from ordered behavior to more random behavior.


      Of course I believe in some evolution but I do not believe in macro-evolution. If you can explain to me how the mammalian blood-clotting system could evolve in a series of fortuitous steps by ‘lucky accidents’ without the ‘subject’ not bleeding to death… I am willing to listen.

      Darwinian descriptions of how the eye ‘could’ have developed from a ‘sensitive spot’ are unintentionally hilarious exercises in magical thinking.


      One of the best rational critics of Darwinsm is mathematician David Berlinski. I suggest reading his book, ‘The Devil’s Delusion.’



      Agreed! We had David out to speak at John Rao’s Summer Symposium in Italy some years ago and, to this day, his remains one of the most memorable presentations ever. He positively destroyed Darwin.


      Actually; you can download The Devil’s Delusion free in several formats Eub, and PDF to name a few. Dr. David Berlinski describes himself as a secular Jew so I would take it at the very least he has some sense of the fear of God. His book is a great testiment against New Age scientific Creationism & Evolution that dominates modern New Age Catholic rationalists; including Pope Bergoglio.

      I was trained as a biochemist and biophysicist. I cannot comprehend how even the most primitive forms of life that we know, and that are all around us, could have come from just matter alone. The more I read and understand (somewhat) how living forms work, the more it awes me. Let alone the chemistry, mechanics, mental and spiritual attributes of a person.
      It really does not make any sense that all this just happened. The radical evolutionists are simply the deniers of God, The Supreme Maker.
      And Descartes got it completely backward…”I think therefore I am,” is BS. Pure narcissism.
      You are a human with a soul, therefore you can think. Made in His image… and that is why you are a human being.


      Theistic evolution is not within the “boundaries” of what Catholic Christians can believe.

      Scripture is higher than popes.
      Popes answer to Scripture – not the other way around.

      Genesis clearly cannot be read in an evolutionary way.

      To do so is to read evolution ‘in’ to Scripture.

      This is impermissible.

      Charles Darwin’s grandfather was a man called Erasmus Darwin.
      He lived in Edinburgh, Scotland.

      He wrote a book called Zoonomia – proposing evolution.

      He was a member of the Lodge.


      The theory of evolution is illogical. It is easily disproven on first principles: there must be a first cause and mover and, also, what is created cannot be greater than the creator. Can a train move itself without a locomotive? Can a rat grow wings become a bat? A child would say no!
      Once people see through the charade of evolution the secular world will collapse.

      To believe in evolution is to call Jesus a liar and the apostles dupes. There will be no Catholic church because the Bible will be destroyed for science, and the supernatural will be lost. Who wants to live in the Brave New World of 1984? I don’t!!!

      The scientific method has become a stevedore for the theory of evolution lugging it into law, religion, and philosophy.


      Do you know why many people believe in dinosaurs, even though the word “dinosaur” was invented in the 1800s? We have train loads and train loads of dinosaur bones. We still dig them up…sometimes on accident. So, where are the train loads of ape-man bones to support Darwinism v1.0 of 1859? The big joke in the 1970s was that all the ape-man bones will fit into a box the size of a coffin. This is why Steven Gould, the Harvard paleontologist “pope of evolution”, launched Darwinism v2.0, a.k.a. Punctuated Equilibrium. Clever, v2.0 does not require ape-man bones. What a waste of scientific money and time. 160 years chasing a unicorn.


      Evolution, old age Earth and Universe, Heliocentrism, ect… are faked materialistic sciences! The only reason people believe in them is because they are taught by (gnostic or atheist) scholars (or their fellow travellers) that control the purse (and issuing of diplomas)! All our modern sciences are under the control of secret societies who created the Royal Society of London and use all means (such as lies, faked experiments, destroying, hiding or simply ignoring evidences against their faked theories!


      By definition, evolution states that all living species on earth developed from other more primitive species, and originally from a single cell, solely through natural processes. That means that no supernatural involvement occurred at any time. So, theistic evolution is a contradiction in terms, and we must logically rule it out immediately and forever. Meanwhile, the remaining “pure” evolution theory, to be credible, must clearly describe the processes by which many transitions occurred, such as those listed below. (These descriptions will, for the moment, be accepted even thought they have never been observed.) 1) The transition from non-life to a living organism. 2) Individual cells living autonomously developing into cells that “decide” to live in clusters. 3) Clusters of identical cells cooperatively acting like a single large organism. 4) Small groups of cells within a larger cluster of identical cells developing into a separate organ for the good of the cluster. 5) What kind of organ would that smaller group of cells within the larger cluster develop into? Where would the design for that new organ come from, having never existed before? 6) The transition from a pair of aquatic living organisms, through small accidental mutations over many generations, into an air-breathing organism. 7) Transition from a fully functioning reptile pair, to a self-preserving flying bird. 8) The development of two sexes from a population without two sexes. This list is far from exhaustive, but it’s a start.


      “Philosopy” ?


      actually the JPII never said ‘Evolution is more than a hypothesis’. This was a speech written by someone else for him to deliver. He never got around to delivering it.


      If we define ‘evolution’ as simply change through descent, there’s no argument since this is an observable fact. Everything changes. But if we expand the definition to include life spontaneously appearing, one thing changing into another thing or explaining the origin of life on earth (atheistic materialistic evolution), then this belief no Catholic may hold.

      This second definition, which defies scientific evidence to the contrary, obliterates original sin, is comfortable with non-being magically becoming being, and is perfectly comfortable with a universe without a cause, is a sin for a Catholic to hold as this definition of evolution is clearly at odds with Catholic doctrine, especially on the creation of the universe by God and original sin. This should be an interesting debate.



      Yes, Pete, we can use the term evolution for change through descent as you say, but this is only change within a species or kind, not from one species or kind to another. We have bred dogs over the years to become very tiny ones to very large ones, but they are still dogs. Plant breeders have all kinds of fun too. God allows us to explore and make some changes to our liking within species.





      I think one thing I have not heard anyone mention in discussions I have heard in the past is that in evolution it is the survival of the fittest (he who dies with the most reproducing offspring wins).
      That word survival means there was sickness, death, violence (think T. rex) and corruption. So if God created all these evils and especially death, how does that make death the wages of sin? (Romans 6:23, Gen. 2:17), I’d say that really messes with not only original sin but Who God is.



      Well, OK, so what do you say about T. Rex?
      a) He did not actually exist. In fact, God put the so-called fossils into the rocks in order to test our faith. (Back when I was growing up, the nuns tried to tell us that one.)
      b) He really ate vegetables, despite those “toofers” that were suitable for biting off chunks of meat, but utterly unsuitable for chewing plant matter.
      c) He got left out of Noah’s Ark, even though Genesis seems to say that Noah get at least a mating pair of EVERY living thing into the Ark.
      d) ??????
      If we stick to pointing out the real and demonstrable problems with Evolution, we have a good case. Why weaken it, in disputations with non-theists, with arguments that appeal only to (some of) those already on our side and which raise questions that we cannot answer to the satisfaction of anyone except possibly our own selves?


      So did Mr Rex exist or not? You listed some intriguing possibilities but didn’t indicate which you believe.
      In the Anti-Evolution museum in Branson, Missouri, Adam is depicted riding a dinosaur. Why can’t Catholics be this bold? Sometimes cowardice is wisdom in disguise.
      Finding mistakes in the theory of evolution doesn’t disprove it after all. The bones are still there, mocking us? Or challenging us to come up with a better theory? Our choice. Argumentation can be done in good faith or bad. There is morality in the search for knowledge after all. And trying to derail the search is always wrong.


      I’m tempted to just say “I don’t know” when I’m asked to explain some things that evolutionists throw in the ring as a defence. But of course they must be challenged in turn because of their indefensible lack of LOGIC in thinking that is the basis for their theory. They “don’t know” either but push a nonsense theory instead of being honest about it.


      Is all Socialism Marxist? No. Is all Evolution theory Darwinian? No. Look into intelligent design. You Assumed I was supporting a mechanical model of evolution devoid of God’s guidance and loving hand.



      Although I don’t know whether to believe the theory of evolution, I wonder what its Catholic critics will think of something I’ve learned because I study Thomism. St. Thomas believes that no philosophical argument can prove that the universe began to exist. So he says that creation out of nothing is compatible with the belief that the universe has always existed. God creates by causing everything and each thing to exist while it does exist. Even if the universe has always existed it still needs Him to sustain it. So for anyone or anything besides him to last, it needs Him to sustain it because if He stopped sustaining it, that would annihilate it. For you to survive, He keeps giving you existence in something like the way an electrical outlet keeps electricity flowing through a string of Christmas light, so it’ll stay lit. Just as the lights will go out when you unplug them, the universe will stop existing if He stops giving it existence.

      Say that I’m right and that the theory of evolution is true. Then that theory of evolution is true. Then theory presupposes that God exists because everyone and everything, including each nature process, needs him to preserve it. That’s why I doubt that fossil record gaps undermine the theory of evolution. If there were no God, there would be no one at all and nothing at all. If there were nothing, there would be no fossil record gaps, since a fossil record gap is something.

      I think there may be no scientific proof that the universe began to exist but there is philosophical proof.

      If you think of infinite regression, for example, you can see that you can’t push the creation of ‘something’ back and back and back forever. There would have to be a start. So before this ‘start’ the thing did not exist. For something to begin to exist it has to have someone to begin it. So there must be someone outside that thing, not in time or space, to be the one who begins it. That’s God and that’s the Creation.


      So the first generation of humans with souls had monkey parents without souls? Must’ve been awkward..



      St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that although people have immortal souls, animals, plants, and other earthly living creatures have mortal ones. Read Pope Pius XII’s encyclical Humani generis because you’ll know that pope thinks it’s okay for experts to study the evidence that the human body has evolved. A human person is made up of a human body and a human soul and your human soul is what makes you a human person. Since a gorilla, say, has a gorilla soul, he’s not a person.

      Pius XII writes, “. . .the Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that,
      in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred
      theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in
      both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as
      far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from
      pre-existent and living matter – for the Catholic faith obliges us to
      hold that souls are immediately created by God. However, this must be
      done in such a way that the reasons for both opinions, that is, those
      favorable and those unfavorable to evolution, be weighed and judged with
      the necessary seriousness, moderation and measure, and provided that
      all are prepared to submit to the judgment of the Church, to whom Christ
      has given the mission of interpreting authentically the Sacred
      Scriptures and of defending the dogmas of faith.[11] Some however,
      rashly transgress this liberty of discussion, when they act as if the
      origin of the human body from pre-existing and living matter were
      already completely certain and proved by the facts which have been
      discovered up to now and by reasoning on those facts, and as if there
      were nothing in the sources of divine revelation which demands the
      greatest moderation and caution in this question.”…

      Maybe I’m wrong and I’m happy to let the Church correct me. But I believe that the creation-or-else-evolution dichotomy is probably false.

      Yes, life is full of awkwardnesses – like a peasant boy who becomes a world famous scholar. How does that effect his relationships with the folks back home? It sure doesn’t improve them, does it? Lacking a soul, the monkey people wouldn’t realize what had changed. Having souls, the poor folks back home would as would the poor boy made good.

      His glory is found in his standardization of the Mass worldwide. It’s that Mass that the modernists of Vatican II abandoned…and that I attend every Sunday. I will once again, as I always do, visit his glass-enclosed remains at St. Mary Major when in Rome in July. St. Pius V, pray for us and intervene on our behalf so that the heretics of today can be cast out and the true faith reign.


      So St. Pius V did not convene Trent, but he implemented its decisions and ordered the Roman Catechism in answer to Trent’s call for better education of priests.

      In these discussions concerning Alfie Evans and Charlie Gard, there is one matter that nags at me. What about the case somewhat the contrary? What if it is parents who decline or refuse medical treatment for their children? What about Jehovah’s Witness parents who do not want their child to have a life saving blood transfusion? I recall a case some years ago in Oregon in which a child was born with a medical condition which was treatable by a surgical procedure that was medically well known and had been performed many times on many children born with that condition. Nevertheless, the parents refused treatment on religious grounds and insisted on resort exclusively to prayer. Were they justified on the grounds of freedom of religion and parental rights to refuse medical treatment for their child? The matter went to court, although I no longer recall how it turned out.

      Alfie’s parents had their decision taken out of their hands against their wishes. The Oregon couple may have had their decision taken out of their hands against their wishes. If the Evans should have been able to get further medical treatment for their child, should the Oregon couple have had the right to refuse medical treatment for their child? I don’t have an answer.

      There are two main aspects: the child’s right to live and the right if parents to consent to medical treatment of their child. In the case of Alfie, the courts overruled BOTH.

      When intervening, especially in the case of a defenseless child, the natural default position (best interests) should be in favour of life and maximum achievable health. If that is the operating ethic, the decisions are less problematic.

      Yes, but who decides what are the best interests? If there is the complaint in the Evans and Gard cases that the state should not have overridden the wishes of the parents, should the state not have overridden the wishes of the parents in the Oregon case? After all, the parents believed that in fact they were acting in the best interests of their child, believing that prayer was more appropriate than medical intervention. They believed that their course would lead to maximum achievable health. Medical doctors and the courts believed otherwise. Who decides? Why one case and not the other?

      Yes, the Semitic Fertility Cult (Carthage was Canaanite in origin and therefore linguistically and culturally Semitic) has been reborn in our age, a late stage of rebellion against Christ and the Mother of God and the Church of Christ. Abortion is our form of child sacrifice, and euthanasia is our form of adult sacrifice. And we certainly now have fetishized homosexuality and a large number of homosexual priests/ministers preying on boys and adolescents. Also, we worship material goods, which is the reason we use the name of a Semitic Fertility Cult god (Mammon) to condemn materialism.

      Since the Reformation, since the beginning of the Modern world, we have been demanding to regress into paganism, calling it freedom, liberty, choice. Vatican II opened the doors and windows of the Catholic Church to that degenerative process that can end only in hell on earth.

      Another example of Moloch inspired Omnipotent British Government. But do not all Western Governments behave in the same likewise manner when it comes to prolonged life support for hospitalized individuals? I witnessed this this attempt with my father involved in a tragic accident requiring life support and a friend of mine who’s father was very ill. Hospitals do pressure families to remove life support on loved ones. Its so terribly sad this happened to precious little child.

      We are worse than the Carthaginians & other Biblical abominators. At least they thought they were ding the right thing for the deities they knew about. We do such things for low “practical” and selfish reasons, and still consider ourselves “enlightened” and “good”.

      In the 20th century alone, there were over 1 BILLION victims of euthanasia and abortion.

      Lord, have mercy upon us.
